Nagasaki’s Commemorations
We learned of the decision from diverse countries not to send their Ambassadors to the Peace Ceremony in Nagasaki. In a common letter from the concerned embassies, the political move to not attend is explained as stemming from the City’s officials decision to not invite the Ambassador of Israel to the ceremony, while a high ranking representative of the Palestinian Authority will be present.
Held on the 9th of August, the ceremony marks the day the atomic bomb was used over the city of Nagasaki, Japan. A day honouring the memories of the estimated 40,000 victims following the bombing of the city.
We are concerned about the impact of such a decision as to the handling of the suffering of innocent population.
The WED reminds that it is the prerogative of the country and the mayor to invite, or not, specific representatives.
