WED Calls on Ireland to Support ICC Compliance by Hungary

The World Embassy Desk (WED) has, in a letter dated 31 March 2025, addressed to Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ireland, called on the Irish Government to use its diplomatic influence to ensure that Hungary complies with its obligations under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The WED expressed concern over recent statements by Hungarian officials indicating possible non-compliance with the ICC arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stressing that such a position would contravene Hungary’s binding obligations under international law.

Recognising Ireland’s long-standing commitment to international law and multilateral cooperation, the WED urged Dublin to raise the issue with Hungary, to promote regional coordination on the enforcement of ICC arrest warrants, and to support a clear EU stance on the matter. The WED emphasised that the request was made with full respect for Hungary’s sovereignty but underlined that States which are party to binding international treaties are expected to uphold their obligations or formally withdraw, rather than engage in unilateral non-compliance.

The WED invited the Irish Government to share its position and expressed its readiness for further engagement in support of international justice and accountability.
