Ireland Reaffirms Support for ICC and Criticises Hungary’s Stance in Response to WED Letter
In response to a letter from the World Embassy Desk (WED), the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland, issued a statement on 10 April 2025 reaffirming Ireland’s strong support for the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing it as the cornerstone of the international criminal justice system.
Ireland expressed concern over the official visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Hungary, noting that he is the subject of an ICC arrest warrant. The Irish Government reiterated the EU’s longstanding commitment to avoid non-essential contact with individuals subject to ICC arrest warrants and stressed the importance of respecting the Court’s independence and impartiality.
The statement further expressed regret over Hungary’s announcement of its intention to withdraw from the Rome Statute, calling it “particularly disappointing” for an EU Member State. It underlined that support for international law is a fundamental EU value that all Member States are obliged to uphold.
Ireland assured that it will continue to work with international partners, including within the EU, to support the ICC in fulfilling its mandate.
