Extrajudicial Killings at Sea: WED Denounces U.S. Attack of 2 September 2025
The World Embassy Desk (WED) expresses its deep concern regarding the recent attack carried out by the United States against a Venezuelan vessel allegedly suspected of carrying narcotics. This action stands in clear violation of the United Nations Charter, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and fundamental principles of international human rights law.
The use of lethal force in this context was disproportionate and unnecessary, showing no respect for human life as enshrined in Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). By bombing the vessel and killing those on board, the United States bypassed all avenues of criminal procedure, denying the alleged suspects any opportunity for due process, proof, or a fair trial. Such extrajudicial measures undermine the very foundations of international justice.
The victims of this attack were deprived of their most basic rights in an act that cannot be justified under international law.
This show of force not only destabilises the region but also erodes confidence in one of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, thereby weakening the credibility of the international system as a whole.
The WED calls for immediate and concrete measures to restore trust in the international order.
