Statement Regarding Developments Relating to Greenland
The World Embassy Desk (WED) notes with concern recent public discourse suggesting that the United States might seek to alter the status of Greenland.
Such discourse, regardless of its origin or context, engages fundamental principles of international law, including respect for territorial integrity, the prohibition of the threat or use of force, and the right of peoples to self-determination, as reflected in the Charter of the United Nations and established international legal practice.
Greenland forms part of the Kingdom of Denmark, while enjoying a high degree of autonomous self-government exercised through democratic institutions. Any consideration of its present or future status can only occur in full conformity with international law and through the freely expressed will of the Greenlandic people.
The WED emphasizes that statements or narratives implying unilateral claims over territory risk undermining mutual trust between states and may contribute to avoidable diplomatic tension, particularly among partners and allies within the international community.
At a time of increased global uncertainty, the World Embassy Desk underscores the importance of restraint, clarity, and adherence to the rules-based international order. The WED encourages all relevant actors to pursue dialogue and cooperation grounded in international law, mutual respect, and peaceful engagement.
