Statement on the Deaths of UN Peacekeepers and Journalists in Lebanon
The World Embassy Desk expresses its grave concern and unequivocally condemns the recent incidents in which United Nations peacekeepers and journalists have lost their lives during the ongoing hostilities in Lebanon.
Attacks against UN peacekeepers, who serve under an international mandate to maintain peace and security, constitute a serious violation of international law. Equally, journalists operating in conflict zones are protected under international humanitarian law, and any acts resulting in their death or injury require prompt, independent, and impartial investigation.
The World Embassy Desk underscores that all parties to the conflict are bound by the rules of international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution. The targeting of protected persons, including peacekeepers and media personnel, is unacceptable and may give rise to international responsibility.
The World Embassy Desk calls upon all parties to strictly adhere to their legal obligations, to ensure the protection of civilians and protected persons, and to take immediate steps aimed at de-escalation and the prevention of further loss of life.
