WED Raises Serious Concern Over Southern Lebanon Developments
The World Embassy Desk (WED) expresses its deep concern regarding recent reports of moves by Israel to occupy or annex parts of southern Lebanon, as highlighted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The WED underscores that any attempt to alter the territorial status of a sovereign State through occupation or annexation raises serious issues under international law. Such actions may engage, inter alia, the prohibition on the acquisition of territory by force, a fundamental principle enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and reaffirmed in longstanding international legal practice.
The WED recalls that respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of all States constitutes a cornerstone of the international legal order. Any deviation from these principles risks further destabilization of an already fragile regional context and may contribute to the escalation of tensions beyond the immediate area concerned.
In line with its independent and non-political mandate, the WED calls upon all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to refrain from actions that could aggravate the situation. The WED further emphasizes the importance of adherence to international humanitarian law and the protection of civilian populations at all times.
The World Embassy Desk remains committed to monitoring developments closely and stands ready, within its mandate, to provide legal and diplomatic assessments aimed at supporting de-escalation and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The WED avails itself of this opportunity to reaffirm its dedication to the principles of international law and peaceful coexistence.
