Continued Escalation in the Middle East Threatens Lives, International Law and the Global Economy

The World Embassy Desk (WED) expresses its serious concern over the continuing expansion of hostilities across the Middle East, including the escalating confrontation involving the Houthis in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

The Houthis have announced restrictions affecting maritime navigation and have threatened vessels using Saudi ports. The resulting disruption in and around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait places one of the world’s most important maritime trade corridors at risk.

The continuation of regional tensions and military hostilities does not only cost the lives of innocent civilians. It also contributes to the further erosion of international law and threatens the stability of the global economy. Disruption of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, particularly when combined with insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz, may severely affect international shipping, energy supplies, insurance costs, food prices and supply chains far beyond the Middle East.

WED emphasises that attacks on civilian infrastructure, commercial vessels and international navigation cannot be justified by political or military disagreements. All parties must respect the principles of distinction, proportionality, sovereignty and the prohibition on the unlawful use of force.

WED calls upon all parties and the wider international community to adopt a principled and consistent position, to oppose unlawful military action and to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the hostilities. Immediate de-escalation, the protection of civilians and the restoration of secure international navigation must now be treated as urgent international priorities.

The world cannot afford another prolonged regional war. Its human, legal and economic consequences will not remain confined to the Middle East.
