WED Welcomes Further International Measures on Trade with Israeli Settlements
The World Embassy Desk (WED) welcomes the recent announcements by the United Kingdom, France and Canada to introduce measures prohibiting trade in goods originating from Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. In doing so, they follow the steps already taken by Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium to restrict trade with Israeli settlements.
WED considers these measures to be important and principled steps towards upholding international law and reinforcing the rules-based international order. They demonstrate the growing responsibility of States to ensure that economic relations do not contribute to activities regarded as contrary to international law.
WED encourages other States to consider adopting comparable measures, consistent with their respective international legal obligations. Coordinated and lawful action by the international community can contribute to accountability, discourage further settlement activity, and support conditions for a just and sustainable peace.
WED reiterates that lasting peace requires respect for international law, meaningful diplomacy, and the protection of the rights, security and dignity of all people affected by the conflict.
