WED Expresses Concern Over Escalating Violence Between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia

The World Embassy Desk (WED) expresses serious concern over the rapidly increasing violence between Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia. Recent missile and drone attacks on southern Saudi Arabia reportedly struck civilian, economic and energy-related sites in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, injuring at least 73 civilians, including women and children. Saudi authorities have described the attacks as a dangerous escalation and have indicated that further measures will be taken in response.

The latest attacks come amid renewed fighting inside Yemen and an increasingly dangerous cycle of military retaliation. The Houthis have said their strikes were carried out in response to Saudi military action in Yemen, while Houthi-controlled media has subsequently reported further Saudi airstrikes. The deterioration follows a period in which the 2022 truce had significantly reduced direct hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.

WED is particularly concerned that renewed cross-border hostilities risk drawing Yemen and Saudi Arabia into another prolonged phase of confrontation. Such an escalation would have consequences far beyond the immediate parties. Attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure have already contributed to rising oil prices, while renewed instability around the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb could further threaten international shipping, energy security and the wider regional economy.

WED calls upon all parties to exercise restraint, respect international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. Military retaliation is unlikely to provide a sustainable solution to the underlying conflict.

The current escalation demonstrates once again the urgent need for renewed diplomatic engagement. WED encourages Saudi Arabia, the Yemeni parties and relevant regional and international actors to restore direct and indirect channels of communication before the present cycle of attacks develops into a broader regional confrontation.

Lasting security for Saudi Arabia and lasting stability for Yemen can only be achieved through diplomacy, political dialogue and a comprehensive settlement that addresses the legitimate security and humanitarian concerns of all parties involved.
