A diplomatic breakdown in relations between Algeria and the UAE risks reinforcing existing regional divisions, in a middle-east that already is under pressure.
In the view of the WED that diplomatic relations are most valuable precisely when governments disagree. The absence of direct communication can deepen mistrust, harden political positions and make future de-escalation more difficult.
For that reason, WED encourages both Algeria and the UAE to keep open the possibility of discreet and neutral dialogue. Immediate reconciliation is not required. The first objective should be to prevent further escalation, clarify the concerns of both sides and preserve a channel through which confidence can gradually be restored.
WED remains convinced that quiet diplomacy can be especially valuable where formal diplomatic channels have reached an impasse.
