WED Expresses Concern over Escalating Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan
The World Embassy Desk is concerned by the renewed and rapidly increasing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Recent attacks inside Pakistan, followed by Pakistani air strikes on Afghan territory and reports of further cross-border drone attacks, have created a dangerous cycle of military action and retaliation. Pakistan maintains that armed groups operating from Afghan territory pose a serious threat to its security, while Afghanistan rejects these allegations and has condemned the Pakistani strikes as violations of its sovereignty.
WED recognises Pakistan’s legitimate responsibility to protect its population against armed attacks. At the same time, counter-terrorism measures must respect international law, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighbouring States, and the obligation to protect civilians.
A further escalation would serve neither country and risks undermining regional stability. WED therefore urges both Islamabad and Kabul to exercise restraint, prevent further cross-border attacks and return to direct dialogue. Existing mediation efforts should be strengthened before the present confrontation develops into a wider conflict.
